You’re not lazy
ADHD is a difference in how attention works.
Most adults who come to Janae with ADHD have spent years being told they just need to try harder, get organized, or care more. They have usually been trying very hard — and burning enormous energy to produce results that come easily to everyone around them.
ADHD affects the brain systems that handle focus, working memory, and follow-through. It is not a character flaw or a matter of discipline, and it does not go away in adulthood. What changes is that the demands get bigger while the external structure that helped in school disappears.
Accurate diagnosis matters, because several other conditions can look like ADHD — and treating the wrong thing rarely helps.
What ADHD often looks like in adults
You don’t need to relate to all of these. Most people recognize a cluster.
- Starting projects with energy, then stalling before the finish
- Losing track of time, or chronically underestimating how long things take
- Difficulty starting tasks that feel boring, even when they matter
- Reading a page or sitting in a meeting and retaining none of it
- Forgetting appointments, bills, or where you set something down
- Restlessness, or needing to be in motion to think clearly
- Interrupting, or finishing other people’s sentences
- Intense focus on things you find interesting — sometimes for hours
- Feeling like you’re working twice as hard for the same result
- A long history of “so much potential” feedback
How Janae approaches ADHD care
Thorough evaluation
A full history of your symptoms, how far back they go, and how they affect work and home — plus screening for anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and other conditions that can mimic or accompany ADHD.
A plan you understand
Janae explains what she found and walks through the options — stimulant medication, non-stimulant medication, behavioral strategies, or a combination — so you can make an informed choice.
Ongoing adjustment
ADHD treatment usually takes some tuning. Follow-up visits track what’s working, manage side effects, and adjust dosing rather than leaving you on a plan that only half fits.
Common questions
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?
Yes. Many adults reach their 30s, 40s, or later before ADHD is identified — often after a child is diagnosed and they recognize the same patterns in themselves. Diagnostic criteria require that symptoms were present in childhood, but they are frequently missed at the time, especially in people who were quiet, academically capable, or good at compensating.
What happens at an ADHD evaluation?
Janae takes a detailed history covering your current symptoms, how far back they go, and how they affect work, school, relationships, and daily tasks. She also screens for conditions that can look like ADHD or occur alongside it. You leave the visit with a clear explanation of what she found and a treatment plan.
Do I have to take stimulant medication?
No. Stimulants are well studied and effective for many people, but they are not the only option. Non-stimulant medications are available, and some patients do well with behavioral strategies, therapy, or a combination approach. Janae discusses the options and works with you to decide what fits your health history and preferences.
Can ADHD be treated by telehealth in California?
Evaluation and ongoing management can often be handled by telehealth anywhere in California. Some ADHD medications are controlled substances subject to federal and state prescribing rules, which may require an in-person visit. Call 909-798-6200 and we’ll explain how this applies to your situation before you schedule.
Does insurance cover ADHD treatment?
Most major carriers cover psychiatric evaluation and medication management. See our accepted plans, or call 909-798-6200 and we’ll verify your specific benefits and copay before your first visit.
